As I think I have mentioned before, I love languages, etymology and names! I also studied Ancient Greek when I was younger, so I couldn't resist compiling a list of Greek kitty names (thanks, Jenna, your website is awesome - all those different cards!) and adding translations.
Next time I get a spare afternoon, I'll go through the puppies as well.
Any mistakes are unfortunately all mine!
Fluffy - Αφρούλα - Afroula - means 'little foam'. A female name. It shares its origin with the goddess name Aphrodite ('born from the foam').
Sapphire - Ζαφειρία - Zafeiria - means 'sapphires'
Thomas - Τόμ - Tom - fairly obvious, I think!
Snuggles - Χαϊδούλα - Chaidoula - a female name. It originates from chaïdeuô, meaning 'to caress' 'to touch lovingly'. I think it could be translated as a 'little snuggle'.
Lucy - Λούσυ - Loúsy - transliteration of Lucy.
Max - Μάξ - Max - self-explanatory!
Charlotte - Σαρλότ - Sarlot - transliteration of Charlotte.
George - Γιώργος - Giôrgos - a Greek form of the name George. It's a diminutive of Geôrgios, and thus, I think, somewhat equivalent to Georgie in English. The name George originally comes from a Greek word meaning 'farmer'.
Tiger - Τιγρούλα - Tigroula - means 'little tiger'. A female name.
Heath - Χήθ - Chêth - this seems to be pronounced chith, and is evidently the closest you can get to the sound of Heath in Greek.
Timothy - Τίμος - Timos - a Greek diminutive of Timothy. Timothy originally comes from a Greek name, Timotheos, meaning 'honouring God'.
Whiskers - Μουστάκιας - Moustakias - means 'moustache'
Miss Pretty - Ομορφούλα - Omorfoula - means 'little beauty'. A female name.
Teeny - Τίνα - Tina - pretty self-explanatory.
Smokey - Σμόκυ - Smoky - transliteration of Smokey
Jimbob - Τσίμπο - Tsimbo - the Greek alphabet has no j, so when transliteration from other languages 'ts' is used to replicate the sound. So this name is basically Jimbo. It also resembles the Greek word tsimpaô, meaning 'to nip' or 'to pinch'.
Lucky - Τυχερούλης - Tucheroulês - a tucheros is one who has good luck, while -oulês is a diminutive applied to male names. 'Little lucky one' might perhaps be a reasonable translation.
Blackie - Μαυρούλης - Mauroulês - means 'little black'. A male name.
Kitty - Κίτυ - Kity - transliteration of Kitty.
Pinkie - Ροζούλα - Rozoula - means 'little pink'. A female name.
Amber - Κοκκινούλης - Kokkinoulês - means 'little red'. A male name.
Lotty - Λότο - Loto - the word Loto or Lotto is usually used in Greek to mean a lottery, but I think in this case it's just an approximation of Lotty.
Emmy - Κλειώ - Kleiô - the Greek version of the name Cleo. The name of the Muse of History in Greek mythology.
Coco - Κοκό - Koko - transliteration. Apparently the word koko is also a childish way of saying 'sweet'.
Theo - Αλί-Μπαμπα - Ali Baba - as in Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Perhaps a reference to Theo's fondness for hiding treasure?
Jake - Όττο - Otto - a random male name.
Joe - Τζο - Tzo - 'Tz' makes a J sound in Greek, and this is the standard transliteration of Joe.
Rosie - Νέττα - Netta - a random female name.
Holly - Τίτο - Tito - a random male name.
Brandy - Μπάντυ - Banty - this name is basically a transliteration of Brandy.
Tammy - Κλιμεντίνη - Klimentinê - Greek form of the name Clementine.
Dulcie - Τάμμυ - Tammy
Susi - Σούζυ - Souzy - transliteration of Susi
Gerard - Ερρίκος - Errikos - somewhat unexpectedly, this is the Greek form of the name Henry.
Nadine - Ισίδωρος - Isidôros - a Greek form of the male name Isidore, which means 'gift of Isis'.
Fleur - Λεώ - Leô - there was evidently some confusion around Leo and Fleur! Apparently Leo is a female name in Greece (not sure if this is true). It's also Greek for 'I say'.
Tina - Ντίνα - Ntina - a female name, short for Konstantina.
Sally - Χαϊντι - Chainti - a variant of the unusual name Haidee, which was invented in 1819 by Lord Byron for use in the poem Don Juan, and which is said to derive from the Greek word aidoios meaning 'modest'.
Berti - Μπέττυ - Betty
Erik - Κόσμο - Kosmo - a male name deriving from the word kosmos, meaning the world or the universe.
Blossom - Ναταλία - Natalia
Sabrina - Αλεξία - Alexia
Kirstie & Harry - Μίτσι & Πιερό - Mitsy & Piero
